Before entering fully into the meaning of the term leave, we will proceed to discover its etymological origin. In this case, we can establish that it derives from Old Castilian, exactly from “lejar”, which, in turn, derives from the Latin “laxare”, which can be translated as “loosen”.
The verb to leave has multiple uses. The first meaning mentioned in the dictionary of the Royal Spanish Academy ( RAE ) refers to the act of letting go of something. Dejar can also refer to authorizing, accepting or allowing something : “I think my mother is finally going to let me have the party at home”, “I’m sorry, but I can’t let you act like that in front of the children”, “The The government is not going to let criminals take over the city. ”

We can also use the verb that concerns us to express stop smoking, which is used very commonly. Specifically, with that expression what is intended to be mentioned is that someone is betting not to use tobacco again.
Likewise, in relation to babies, the term that concerns us is also used in various ways. One is the expression to stop using diapers, which basically consists of the boy or girl no longer using diapers and going to the bathroom to relieve himself like other people.
In addition, the expression to leave the pacifier or leave the bottle is also used. The first refers to the process by which the child no longer resorts to the pacifier to calm down or stop crying and the second refers to the fact that the child in question no longer feeds on milk through a bottle. This means that, therefore, they begin to have what is known as complementary feeding, which is when children, starting at six months of age, begin to stop having milk as their only sustenance. Thus, they already eat fruit, cereals, some meat, vegetables…
Other meanings of leaving are linked to entrusting, ordering, ordering or bequeathing something: “I am going to leave my library to my nephew”, “Alberto is going to leave the boys in the care of his father”, “The man is not there, Do you want to leave a message?” .
